Kangasala Public Library

General Information

The purpose of Kangasala Public Library is to create opportunities for the inhabitants of Kangasala district to improve their minds, widen their worldview and horizons, give them information, inspirations and experiences to enrich their lives.

Kangasala Library and the libraries of the surrounding municipalities employ a shared computerized library system (PIKI).

The library is open to all. The collections, services and public premises can be used by anyone who will observe the library rules.

To obtain a library card, you should present an identity card bearing your photograph and personal identity code and give your address. A person under the age of 15 will need a custodian’s guarantee. By signing the library card, you undertake to comply with the library rules.

A valid library card registered in the PIKI system entitles you to borrow material from the library. The card is for your personal use only. You will be responsible for the items borrowed on your library card or on the card of a child guaranteed by you as a custodian.

Please inform us if there is a change in your name or address. Please report immediately if you happen to lose your library card. You will not be held responsible for items borrowed on your card after the loss was reported.

The lending of audiovisual programmes is subject to age limits imposed by the Finnish Board of Film Classification.

Disorderly conduct may lead to the loss of right to use the library.

Protection of library user's data

When you get your library card, you are entered in the PIKI system’s register of borrowers. The library has the right to register your personal identity code (Personal Data Act 523/1999, Section 13). A specification of the borrower register is available in the library.

The register of borrowers is only used for the control of borrowed items. Personal or loan details are confidential and will not be divulged to outsiders.

The Personal Data Act provides that people have the right to know what information has been stored on them in the personal register. A guarantor has the right to check library claims on the child for whom he or she is acting as a guarantor. The request for a check shall be made in writing or personally to the registrar. You have the right to check your details without charge once a year and the right to require any faulty information to be corrected.

Borrowing, renewal and returns

The loan period varies from 1 to 28 days. The loan period expires at the library closing time on the due date.

The library may restrict the number of items borrowed or held on loan simultaneously.

Any loans can be extended unless the item has been reserved by another customer. Loans can be renewed on a visit to the library, over the telephone, or on the Internet using a personal password. You may renew a loan five times on a row without having to present the borrowed item in the library.

As a general rule, borrowed material shall be returned to the branch from which it was borrowed. An item to be transported from Kangasala to another library within the PIKI system is subject to a district transport fee.

Fees and right to borrow

You may reserve any of the library’s borrowable material by paying a fee. The fee will not be returned.

A fine will be charged for any items not returned by the due date. It will be charged for all calendar days exceeding the due date up to a maximum limit per item. The fine will be charged even if a renewal has failed because of a fault of the Internet or another technical fault.

Fines will not be charged for overdue items for children’s material other than videos, DVDs and CD-ROMs.

A lost or damaged item must be replaced with an equivalent item or compensated by paying a sum determined by the library. Owing to a specific copyright fee on each video recording , DVD and CD-ROM, this type of items cannot be replaced with an equivalent recording. In addition to the compensation payment, we shall charge the cost of preparing the item for lending. The payments will not be returned.

A customer will lose his or her right to borrow from any library included in the PIKI system for the following reasons:

  • failure to return borrowed items
  • overdue payments in excess of a specified limit
  • loss or damage of library property.

A lost right to borrow can be regained by

  • returning the borrowed items and paying the corresponding fines
  • by replacing or compensating the lost or damaged material
  • by paying all library charges.

The customer shall pay the cost of collection.

Interlibrary loan services

If an item is not available at Kangasala Library, we can acquire it from another library. Interlibrary lending services are subject to national instructions and the rules and fees of the library issuing the loan. A fee will be charged for the service, and the customer must have a valid card of the PIKI library system.
